In 2003, the Wallaceburg Advisory Team for a Cleaner Habitat (WATCH)
began as a committee under the direction of the Wallaceburg Chamber of Commerce,
in response to a chemical company's spill into St. Clair River.
The advisory group has become an environmental grassroots organization that
represents the citizens of Wallaceburg and surrounding areas by engaging in
public discourse with Sarnia Petrochemical Industries on spill prevention and
effluent monitoring.
WATCH's primary focus is water pollution, but the group also promotes public
awareness and education on water quality and the aquatic ecosystem.
WATCH is part of the Industrial Pollution
Action Team (IPAT) and monitors industrial activities in the area as
per the terms set forth in the Ontario Environmental Bill of Rights.
Supporting
Environmental Education
WATCH is a proud sponsor of Wallaceburg District Secondary School
(WDSS) and
supports local environmental education at all levels.
Each year, the student with the highest mark in Grade 9 SNC1D and SNC1P will
each receive a cash award from WATCH.
In addition,
with a cash donation of $500 from WATCH in the fall of 2009, the
WDSS Science Department purchased aquatic probes, chemicals and
equipment for water testing exercises and provided teaching
resources to staff.
WATCH pilots with WAMBO
23 to reduce waste by supplying the Chatham Kent
Municipality with recylcing totes and a trailer that can be used at
all future CK special events.
Thanks to Community Futures and Ridge Landfill Trust for their
financial support!!!
Thanks to Goodwill
Future
Focus (Wallaceburg) for providing the work force to operate
the recycling and waste stations throughout the WAMBO weekend.
